If you are
feeling frustrated about your compulsive eating habit, then listen carefully to
what I have to tell you.
Have you
ever noticed...
that more often than not, you eat
compulsively when you are emotionally unstable? That you are more liable to go
on another overeating session when your stress level is high?
This is
often the case when you have just had a heated argument or feel cheated upon.
During such times, you'll long to have something to soothe your pain - anything
will do. But unfortunately, you reach for candies and snacks almost all the
time.
Psychologically,
foods provides this type of relief. This explains why you reach for a chilled
soda after throwing tantrums at your colleague, or head straight to the
refrigerator after a long day's work.Do you see the connection? I bet you do!
In plain
words: Stress level contributes to eating patterns.
Therefore,
for you to learn how to stop compulsive eating; you need to learn ways to
control your stress level. Controlling your stress level is a lifelong process;
you don't master it all at once.
Life is
with all its struggles -conflict, apartment relocation and troubled
relationships are daily occurrences in our lives. But how we deal with these
stress triggers define how to stop compulsive eating behaviours.
Remember:
you are responsible for how you feel; no one else is. Therefore, seek ways to
manage your emotions and you would have learnt how to stop compulsive eating
for good.
Use The
Slow-mo Technique
One method
that has worked for me is what I call the 'slow-mo' technique. It is an effective
method that should be used, not only to learn how to stop compulsive eating,
but to stop bad habits in other areas of your life as well.
The
slow-mo technique just requires 4 simple steps
Step #1 -
Pick One Session: just one overeating session that you did so poorly. It
doesn't matter if you've had several sessions, just pick one.
Step #2 -
Hit The Slow-mo Button: think deeply about what led to such experience. Who
were you with? What was your emotional state at that point? Were you so
emotionally unstable that you thought candies was the only way out?
Step #3 -
Ask Yourself: what could you have done that would have reversed the situation?
Think deeply. Would it have been nice if you told your boss he was stalking you
and it's making you uncomfortable? Or telling a colleague would be better? Just
think of things you could have done that would have changed the situation.
Step #4 -
What will You Do Today: if such an experience were to happen today, what path
would you take? Is it to go with candies or look for a resolute way to resolve
the situation?
If you can
pull this off effectively, then you have mastered how to stop compulsive eating
during difficult times. Next time a situation like that occur, you won't be
going on another eating session but through this newly defined path you have
created.
A lifelong
Process
Getting
rid of bad habits is a lifelong habit, you will find this technique useful in
different aspects of your life. don't be discouraged if you didn't get it the
first time, it's something you'll master with practise.
